A friendly, practical guide for new collectors.
Where the Journey Begins
Starting a vintage collection is like opening a door to a world of beauty, history, and discovery. It doesn’t require expertise, only curiosity.
This guide helps new collectors understand what to look for, how to care for pieces, and how to build a collection that feels personal and cohesive.
1. Start with What You Love
Do you love:
- pottery?
- crystal?
- textiles?
- jewellery?
- tableware?
Let your heart lead, not trends. Whatever you are naturally drawn to sets the tone.
2. Learn to Identify Quality
Look for:
- weight and balance
- fine detailing
- maker’s marks
- craftsmanship
- natural materials
Our collection is full of excellent examples:
Australian Robert Gordon
English Denby
Japansese Kasuga Stoneware
French Limoges Porcelain
Hand Thrown Australian Pottery
3. Build Slowly
A meaningful collection grows over time. Choose pieces that speak to you.
4. Care for Your Pieces
Ceramics - Hand wash to avoid thermal shock, deglazing, and general damage.
Crystal - Use warm water, soft cloths, and avoid harsh detergents.
Textiles - Gentle wash without harsh chemicals, air dry and store flat.
Wood - Oil occasionally and avoid soaking.
5. Display with Intention
Group by:
- colour
- material
- era
- maker
Or mix for an entirely eclectic look. Make it yours, but try to follow the rule of three to ensure cohesion.
A Collection That Tells Your Story
Vintage collecting isn’t about perfection, it’s about connection.
Each piece becomes part of your home’s narrative and only you should create that story. There is nothing quite like the sound of vistors oo'ing and ahh'ing over your vintage items, vingettes, and collections, and loving the story behind them.
